The Jazz Expressions

This New York based band can’t seem to sit still.  With extensive tours all over the world, including Japan, North and South America, England and Ireland, Europe, and the Near East, they have a huge audience of fans everywhere.

Launched by the famed jazz balladeer Jimmy Scott as his backup band over fifteen years ago, it took on a life of its own, and with his blessings and urgings is performing on its own in addition to its continuing role as Jimmy’s band.

Always staffed by powerhouse players, it has blossomed under bassist Hilliard Greene’s direction since 1994.

Tours

Throughout its tours with Jimmy, the band developed its stand-alone numbers and its own following around the world.  The group has performed across the United States, in Canada, and in the Caribbean, Argentina, Brazil, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Monaco, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Japan.

What They Say

Led by Hilliard Greene on bass, the Jazz Expressions are as sensual and tight as a velvet glove. --Marc O’Sullivan, Hot Press

Sharing the stage with the incredible jazz quartet The Jazz Expressions, [Jimmy] Scott exemplified the one thing most singers try to achieve: truth in a lyric. … I can’t say enough about the Jazz Expressions.  It would be hard to find more committed or more brilliant musicians.  With T.K. Blue on saxophone and flute, Aaron Graves on piano, Dwayne Broadnax on drums, and Hilliard Greene on bass, this quartet deserved wider recognition and a place on the Jazz at Lincoln Center series roster.  Their improvisations and progressive unions are flawless.--John Hoglund, Back Stage

The Jazz Expressions, led by Bassist Hilliard Greene, may be the best supporting group currently backing a singer.--Bob Blumenthal, Boston Globe

It was easy to love Jimmy Scott and his brilliant quartet, The Jazz Expressions, led by inventive bassist Hilliard Greene.--John Griffin, The Montreal Gazette

Scott can swing, too, in tandem with his marvelously empathetic backup trio … Hilliard Greene, simply one of the best bassists I have ever heard with a singer, can sound like a flamenco guitar one moment and a wailing horn the next.--Misha Berson, Seattle Times

The New York-based trio called The Jazz Expressions openaed with high-octane bop … Their richly textural, three-way musical conversations were impressive, but they were even sharper supporting Scott’s soulful, wildly daring, wise interpretations.

--Joseph Blake, Times Colonist, Victoria
